WHERE WE WORK:
Myanmar (formerly Burma)

MYANMAR CYCLONE RELIEF EFFORTS

Despite the many difficulties working in an isolated country like Myanmar, Operation USA has managed to find partner aid groups--both Burmese and international--to work with.  We are focusing our efforts on providing material resources to those rendering medical assistance on the frontlines in Myanmar--in the Delta, to the areas just outside Yangon and along Myanmar's long border with Thailand where 250,000 refugees have fled. A coordinating body made up of United Nations agencies and private relief groups has been established in Bangkok, Thailand, to assist with logistics and to coordinate aid to various sectors making up the relief effort: medical, shelter, food, agricultural, transport, water & sanitation and education.

The numbers of dead, missing, injured and ill have mounted to nearly "Asian Tsunami levels"--approaching 200,000. Under intense pressure from the world's governments and the United Nations, the Burmese "junta" has yet to fully comply with its own commitment to open the country's borders to aid workers and their supplies.
